18 x 24 inches
Mixed Media with Oil, Gallery Wrapped Canvas
Three male Blue Pansy butterflies (Junonia orithya) over swirls of ink against a tan background. The smallest butterfly is only drawn with the barest hints of color. The second largest has more color and paint, but is still mostly drawn. The third and largest butterfly is half drawn, half painted, the painted wing having the same vibrant blues, white markings, and orange eye spot that the real life butterfly has.
Inspiration
I was searching for butterflies I hadn’t seen before that caught my eye, and this particular butterfly did the trick. The interesting markings and vibrant blue looked too beautiful not to paint it! I also liked the idea of the butterfly coming more to life the ‘closer’ it was to the front of the painting.
